Daily News

Daily News is a national newspaper founded in 1919. It is considered to be the first successful tabloid in the United States. The paper was known for its zesty headlines — perhaps most famously when it screamed “Ford to City: Drop Dead” during New York’s financial crisis of 1975 — and for intense city news coverage and star columnists such as Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill. It won 11 Pulitzer Prizes during its long tenure under publisher Mort Zuckerman, including one shared with ProPublica this year for uncovering how authorities were using an obscure law to evict poor residents from their homes.

Daily News has struggled to adapt to the digital era, battling a decline in print circulation as readers and advertising dollars have shifted online. Its website, the Daily News Online, has seen steady growth in readership and ad revenue over the past few years. However, the newspaper has also had to contend with a muscular hometown tabloid rival, News Corp’s News Corp-owned New York Post.

In its heyday, the Daily News had one of the largest circulations of any daily newspaper in the world, reaching a peak of nearly 2 million copies sold per day in 1947. The newspaper was famous for its sensational crime and scandal coverage and lurid photographs. Its headquarters was the iconic Daily News Building at 450 West 33rd Street, which was designed to resemble a globe and was a symbol of New York City’s growing internationalism.

Today the paper is owned by Tronc, which publishes a number of major newspapers including the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. Tronc has pledged to keep the Daily News a strong presence in New York and will preserve its reputation for journalism, even as it adjusts to the changing media environment.
