Daily News is a newspaper with wide distribution that provides a general overview of information touching different aspects of life. Its main focus is on political news, local projects of the government, business and economic development, etc. However, it also covers a wide range of information like gossip, rumors, sports, advertisements, agriculture, family news, obituaries and more. Its front pages cover the latest trends in national and local politics, with the most newsworthy information appearing at the top of the page.
The newspaper follows a format known as the inverted pyramid, with the most important information going first and less-important details moving downward. Its staff is composed of professional journalists, who write news articles based on the facts. They use various methods of research such as interviewing people, studying books and researching online. Upon finishing a piece, the reporter checks it for errors and ensures that all important information is included.
A typical newspaper story begins with an event that is happening, and then goes on to detail the events that led up to it. The story then explains the cause and effect of the event, as well as who was involved in it. The last part of the article identifies the consequences that occurred after the event.
Often, Daily News stories also include pictures taken by photographers who work for the paper. These pictures are usually accompanied by captions that identify the subject and the location. In some cases, photographs are edited using computer software such as Adobe PageMaker or Adobe InDesign. The newspaper’s layout department then uses these programs to paginate the article — or arrange the information in a way that will appeal to readers.
In addition to writing news articles, Daily News also prints editorials, opinion pieces and personal columns. In the past, it was not uncommon for the paper to endorse presidential candidates. The paper also covers sports in the area, including school, community and professional teams. Occasionally, the paper publishes sports statistics and scores as well.
While the newspaper has lost its monopoly in New York City, it is still one of the most widely read newspapers in the United States. Its editorials are influential, and its sports sections are among the most popular in the country.
The newspaper traces its roots back to 1919, when Joseph Medill Patterson founded it in New York City as the Illustrated Daily News. The paper later became the New York Daily News. In 1929 the Daily News moved to its current home, a landmark building at 220 East 42nd Street, designed by architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building was used as the model for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films. The Daily News remained in the building until 1995, when it moved to 450 West 33rd Street. The building is now home to WPIX-TV and WFAN-FM. The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1994.
