The Daily News

The Daily News is a morning tabloid newspaper published in New York City, once the largest circulation daily newspaper in the United States. It was founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News and, in 1930, changed its name to the Daily News, with the aim of attracting readers by sensational coverage of crime, scandal, and violence, as well as cartoons and entertainment features. The New York Daily News was the first successful tabloid in the United States, and its success led to the establishment of many other such newspapers throughout the world.

As the digital age continues to transform our society, daily news is becoming increasingly available online. While this is a boon for people who like to get their information in bite-sized chunks, it has been challenging for traditional print newspapers that must compete with digital news sources for readership and advertising revenue. The number of Americans who subscribe to printed newspapers has declined steadily since 2000, and the percentage of Americans who get their news online is growing. As a result, many newspapers have had to cut back on staff or close altogether.

Each day’s article is accompanied by comprehension and critical thinking questions that help students better understand the news story. “Background” and “Resources” (including video clips, maps and links) are also provided beneath each question to further enrich the learning experience. Students can practice their knowledge of the world around them by answering these questions and by locating additional resources on their own.

Daily News articles can be easily incorporated into any classroom curriculum. They are vetted to be as unbiased as possible and come from a wide variety of sources, including national and international media organizations. Students can use these articles to learn about a topic, make inferences and develop their own opinions. In addition, teachers can use these articles to teach writing skills and vocabulary.
