The Daily News

In its 20th-century heyday, the New York Daily News was a brawny metro tabloid that thrived when it dug into crime and corruption. It served as the inspiration for the tabloid newspaper depicted in the 1994 movie “The Paper,” and has won Pulitzer Prizes in commentary, feature writing and even international reporting. Today, the New York Daily News is a daily newspaper that publishes in tabloid format, and competes with the rival New York Post and other newspapers.

The renowned ITN Video Archive is an extraordinary repository of British cultural history, featuring iconic news footage from the first broadcasts of ITN’s famous daily news programmes to the present day. The archive contains more than a million video clips, covering a range of genres, including world, sports and entertainment, war, disasters, politics, the environment and the royals.

During its long history, the newspaper has faced financial challenges, but it has also won praise for its investigative journalism and editorial independence. The paper has won many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1988, when a reporter strapped a camera to his leg and captured a photo of police beating an innocent citizen.

As the name suggests, the New York Daily News was founded in 1919 and is based in New York City. Its first editor was Joseph Medill Patterson, and its first offices were in a downtown Manhattan skyscraper that straddled the tracks leading into Pennsylvania Station. The Daily News was a pioneer in tabloid journalism, and has been at the forefront of many technological developments in the field of newspaper production, such as the introduction of photography, the use of wirephotos and the development of photo-engraving techniques.

There are a number of different types of newspaper articles, and students can practice their analysis skills by identifying the categories of news that an article belongs to. These include:

Opinion Articles

Opinion articles are often written by people who have a strong opinion on the topic of an article. These are not meant to be objective and are often geared towards entertaining the reader rather than providing factual information. This type of news article is commonly found in tabloids and may be referred to as clickbait.

Features Articles

Unlike the other two genres of newspaper article, features are usually in-depth pieces about specific subjects or events. They are normally found in the local or national section of a newspaper and can be either positive or negative. They can be a great way to introduce students to more detailed and in-depth writing than is required in the other two genres.

Despite its rocky financial history, the newspaper has enjoyed a loyal following, particularly among the city’s working class readers. The paper is still a major source of political information in New York City and is often used to gauge voter sentiment ahead of elections. The paper is also a popular choice for sports fans, as it offers coverage of the Yankees, Mets and Giants.
