Digital Archive of the Daily News

News is a general term used for information about events, people, and places. It can be found in newspapers, magazines, and on the internet. News is often about politics and business, but it can also be about weather, sports, and entertainment. News is typically written by professional writers who select and write stories based on their knowledge and experience. A news story may include current events, analysis of trends, and opinions about different topics.

In the early days of journalism, the news was delivered to people in town by word of mouth, or it was printed on paper that was distributed to subscribers of a newspaper. Later, it became possible to communicate with people instantly across long distances by radio and television, and then by the internet. This allowed people to receive the latest news as it happened. The news was usually delivered in the form of headlines and pictures. It was important that the news was accurate and impartial, but public opinion was a key factor in how news was perceived.

The New York Daily News was a tabloid daily newspaper founded in 1919. It was the first successful tabloid in the United States and reached its peak circulation in 1947. The News attracted readers by featuring sensational coverage of crime, scandal, and violence, lurid photographs, and cartoons. The paper was an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service in the 1930s and developed a large staff of photographers.

When the newspaper was owned by the New York Times Company, it competed with its rival, the New York Post, in a fierce battle for readers. The Post was able to attract a larger audience because it was more sensational, but the Daily News was still one of the most popular newspapers in the nation.

Since its acquisition by the hedge fund Alden Global Capital in 2017, the Daily News has been shrinking. The newspaper has slashed costs, cut jobs, and outsourced its printing plant. The paper has suffered from a declining advertising revenue and an aging reader base. In 2019, the newspaper has faced intense competition from other digital outlets, and its subscriptions have declined.

The Yale Daily News Historical Archive provides access to digitized versions of printed issues of the Yale Daily News from its founding on January 28, 1878 through 2023. The archive is free and open to the world.

The Yale Daily News is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States, and is editorially and financially independent of the university. It publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year, as well as a weekly Friday supplement and multiple annual special sections. The YDN covers news in Genesee, Wyoming and Orleans counties, including Yale, New Haven and surrounding communities. The YDN is also known for its longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion, in particular its work on affirmative action at selective colleges. This work has been augmented in recent years by extensive investigation into Yale’s admissions policies, particularly regarding legacy and donor-related preference.
